How A.R. works:
The Accelerated Reader program is designed by a company called Renaissance Learning, Inc. The developers worked closely with teachers, parents and students to create a nationwide program that motivates children to become independent readers while enhancing their comprehension.
How A.R. works:
- Students take a STAR test that provides information on their reading level.
- Each quarter, 1st - 5th grade teachers set individual point goals for all students using the students' individual reading ranges as a basis.
- Students choose A.R. books within their reading range (ZPD) to read.
- Use AR Bookfinder to find out if a book is A.R. and what level it is.
- Students take the Reading Practice quiz for that book on a computer at school and answer literal comprehension questions about the book.
- Based on the number of questions answered correctly, students earn points and receive a score which is added into their average percent correct.
- Students in grades 1-5 are striving to meet their individual goal by reaching their point goal with an accuracy rate of 85 percent or higher.
- A.R. provides targeted reading practice at your child's personalized reading level.
- Students should use the ZPD (reading level range) given to them by their teacher.
- This targeted reading practice fuels growth.
- Taking the reading comprehension quizzes helps to monitor comprehension and serves to guide future reading choices.
- Students have a wide range of books to choose from so they are able to read books that they are interesting to them.
- Make sure your child reads every day and sign his/her reading log (if the teacher uses one).
- Provide opportunities for your child to select books in his/her reading range from both the Pembroke Pines Charter West Elementary library media center and the public library.
- Encourage your child to take AR quizzes on a regular basis.
- Help your child pace himself/herself toward meeting his/her AR goal for the quarter.
- PLEASE NOTE: In order to meet the goal, your child must meet two criteria: have an average percent correct on quizzes of 85% or higher AND obtain the number. of points required by his/her goal.
